Johnson Narrowly Avoids Disqualification at Northern Trust Open 2011

January 29, 2011 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - UK Golf Betting News

At the Northern Trust Open, Dustin Johnson was lucky enough to avoid a disqualification by mere seconds. Johnson made it with six seconds to spare. The world’s 14th-ranked golfer was nearly missing his 7:32 AM tee-time.

On his first hole, he was penalized by a two-stroke by the officials. According to a tour spokesperson, a double-bogey seven on the par-5 made him limp out. At the second and eighth, Johnson followed up his double with bogeys. In 37, he made his turn after the birdies on the fifth and ninth holes. Johnson is now tied for 69th place and on the tournament; he stands at four-over.

At the PGA Championship in August, Johnson missed a playoff. On the 72nd hole, he was penalized by two shots when he could recall about a club he had grounded in a bunker. The golfer blamed himself for the gaffe. He had not read the posters that warned about such hazards, although the posters were plastered all over the men’s locker room.

Young golfer from Australia, Jerrod Lyle is in the lead. He had an incredibly hot start. In his first six holes, he has two birdies and an eagle. For the lead, his -4 is tied with John Senden. To the top of the leader board, Senden had eagled his 13th hole of the day. PGA tour mainstay Chris DiMarco is one stroke behind them. Paddy Harrington is t -2. He had a very difficult 2010 season. He is back by just two shots.

The betting odds for the golfers at the Northern Trust Open are Phil Mickelson 8/1,Steve Stricker 14/1, Dustin Johnson 22/1, Luke Donald 22/1, Hunter Mahan 25/1, Matt Kuchar 25/1, JB Holmes 29/1, Paul Casey 29/1, Rickie Fowler 35/1 and Bubba Watson 40/1.

Qatar Masters: Goosen on Top

On the opening day of the Qatar Masters, strong winds have played havoc, with the swirling desert sand reducing visibility at the Doha Golf Club. With the winds of up to 40 kilometers per hour (25 mph), players in the $2.5 million event struggled to cope. The forecasters expected the winds to strengthen during the afternoon. In the opening round, only nine players broke par. It was the veterans with a great deal of experience playing in Doha who emerged strongest, On a day of complete mayhem when only eight players broke par. Edgerton native was 4-over-par 76 in the first round of the Qatar Masters.

With double U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen, celebrating his 42nd birthday, just over a dozen of the 66 players out on the course were under par, sharing the lead at two-under par after nine holes. To grab the lead during the suspended first round of the Qatar Masters, Retief Goosen shot a three-under 69. On a windy day at Doha Golf Club that produced a lot of high scores, the 2007 winner of this event, had five birdies and two bogeys. Before tripping to his first bogey at the par-four 15th, he posted birdies on Nos. 12 and 14. At the 16th, he immediately responded with another birdie to move back to two-under around the turn.

After nine, world number one Lee Westwood was one-over-par while playing companion and world number seven Steve Stricker was struggling at four-over. He was on a first visit to the region.

At the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, Martin Kaymer was expected to challenge Lee Westwood’s top ranking. As strong winds lashed the Doha Golf Club and pounded some of the game’s best-known names into submission, the German World No. 2 finds himself in a precarious position from where even making the halfway cut would be considered a significant achievement.

At one-under 71, Markus Brier, Seve Benson, Thomas Aiken and Oliver Fisher are tied for sixth.

LAST WEEK: There isn’t much to say about the Northern Trust Open. Bubba Watson was the pick but, low and behold, he got hurt and withdrew. Nothing we can do about that but dust ourselves off and move forward.

THIS WEEK’S PGA BETTING
Date: Feb. 23 – 27
Event: World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship
Course: Ritz-Carlton GC, Dove Mountain, Marana, Arizona
Purse: $8,500,000
Defending Champ: Ian Poulter
Winning Share: $1,400,000
FedEX Cup Points Up For Grabs: 500

The World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship always makes for a fun, different golf betting experience. It also makes for a challenging one. Even though the host course, the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain, is the longest track on Tour at 7,849 yards, recent winners Ian Poulter and Geoff Ogilvy aren’t long hitters. So what can we use to judge our picks?

The best bets this week are guys playing good golf at the moment and guys who have shown they can handle the unique pressure of match play. We should also pay attention to guys who hit greens, as they’re much harder to hit than the fairways at this course.

THE TIGER CATEGORY

Tiger Woods
WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship odds: +1015

Go ahead and waste your money on Tiger if you want. Until he shows he has something left in the tank, I’m not touching him. He might have his head on straight by 2012.

THE ELITE

Martin Kaymer
WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship odds: +1415

The world No. 2 won’t sneak up on the competition this year. He won on the European Tour at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship but followed that showing up with a 28th and a 31st. He’s not hot and has finished a ho-hum 17th, 17th and 33rd at the Match Play the last three years.

Paul Casey
WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship odds: +1415

He certainly warrants strong consideration as one of the world’s top players and a two-time runner up at this event. However, there isn’t a golfer whose health I trust less than Casey’s. The next injury is always just around the corner.

THE CONTENDERS

Phil Mickelson
WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship odds: +1850

Mickelson certainly hasn’t been bad so far this season, with two top-10s and no worse than 35th over his first four starts. He almost always cracks the top 10 at the Match Play as well. But with a field so strong, I’m looking for a guy who is really hitting the ball on the screws right this second. Lefty isn’t that guy.

Lee Westwood
WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship odds: +1850

Great golfer but not suited to this tournament. Lee Westwood hasn’t advanced past the second round in any of his last 10 tries at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships. Avoid him.

Graeme McDowell
WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship odds: +2050

He hasn’t won a match yet at the Ritz-Carlton but I subscribe to the logic that this year’s Graeme McDowell is a different golfer than last year’s. His confidence has never been higher. That makes him an intimidating foe for any opponent and someone for bettors to consider.

SOLID PICKS

Matt Kuchar
WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship odds: +2550

Few guys are swinging as smoothly as Matt Kuchar is right now. He opened 2011 with three straight top-10 finishes and is a top-25 guy on Tour in both greens in regulation and putting. That bodes extremely well for his chances this week.

Nick Watney
WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship odds: +2850

Interesting how I like the guys more as we head further down the list and into the longer odds. Watney leads the Tour in adjusted scoring average; it’s hard to argue with that stat as a reflection of who is playing the best golf day-in, day-out. He has three straight top-six finishes on Tour as well.

THE SLEEPER

Justin Rose
WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship odds: +6050

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Rose at more than 60 to 1 odds? Even though he’s posted seven-straight top 25s on Tour? That seems like insanity, doesn’t it? Rose is also 19th in greens hit, which I would argue is the most important stat for this tournament.

THE PICK

In all honesty, I like Nick Watney the most to win this week. But I can’t in good conscience ignore how good the return is for picking Justin Rose. It’s more than double what you get for betting on Watney. The books have left me no choice but to recommend Rose, who has almost as good a shot to win as any of the names listed above him.

WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship pick: Justin Rose +6050

Golf Betting Odds: WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship

June 12, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Golf Betting

The old Tiger used to dominate all the WGC events. (AP Images)

Outside of golf’s four major tournaments and the Ryder Cup, no event is more interesting to bet on than the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, the only match play event on the PGA Tour. It begins Wednesday in Arizona.

This NCAA Tournament-bracket style event is by far the best tournament of the year so far and features 62 of the world’s Top 64 ranked players – two of the Top 64, Toru Taniguchi and Tim Clark, had to withdraw due to injuries. Taniguchi’s withdrawal might not be a good thing for world No. 1 Lee Westwood, who is the top seed in the Bobby Jones bracket. That’s because Henrik Stenson replaced Taniguchi and will face Westwood (18/1 on Bodog to win this tournament) in the first round Wednesday. Stenson won this event in 2007 and Westwood doesn’t have a good record in this tournament in never getting past the second round. It could be the third No. 16 seed over a No. 1 seed in first-round history.

The favorite on Bodog’s golf odds to win is Tiger Woods at 10/1. Of course Woods hasn’t had a victory since his personal life became tabloid fodder in 2009. But Tiger, the top seed in the Sam Snead bracket, has won this tournament three times: in 2003, 2004 and 2008. He was the only player to repeat and set the record for biggest margin of victory in the ’08 final, an 8-and-7 rout of Stewart Cink. You can bet on which player wins each individual bracket, and Tiger’s is loaded with two-time Match Play winner Geoff Ogilvy and two-time runner-up Paul Casey (the second favorite at 12/1 to win the tournament) – not to mention Dustin Johnsonand Ernie Els.

The other top overall seeds are Phil Mickelson in the Ben Hogan bracket and Martin Kaymer in the Gary Player bracket. Kaymer (14/1 to win) is considered the top player in the world right now even though he’s technically No. 2 in the world rankings. The 2010 PGA Championship winner has never won a WGC event and is 2-3 all-time at the Match Play. Mickelson (16/1) hasn’t lost a first-round match in his last seven attempts but he’s never gotten past the quarterfinals in 10 career starts.

You can bet on every Match Play match as well as daily futures updates at Bodog
