Johnson Narrowly Avoids Disqualification at Northern Trust Open 2011

At the Northern Trust Open, Dustin Johnson was lucky enough to avoid a disqualification by mere seconds. Johnson made it with six seconds to spare. The world’s 14th-ranked golfer was nearly missing his 7:32 AM tee-time.
On his first hole, he was penalized by a two-stroke by the officials. According to a tour spokesperson, a double-bogey seven on the par-5 made him limp out. At the second and eighth, Johnson followed up his double with bogeys. In 37, he made his turn after the birdies on the fifth and ninth holes. Johnson is now tied for 69th place and on the tournament; he stands at four-over.
At the PGA Championship in August, Johnson missed a playoff. On the 72nd hole, he was penalized by two shots when he could recall about a club he had grounded in a bunker. The golfer blamed himself for the gaffe. He had not read the posters that warned about such hazards, although the posters were plastered all over the men’s locker room.
Young golfer from Australia, Jerrod Lyle is in the lead. He had an incredibly hot start. In his first six holes, he has two birdies and an eagle. For the lead, his -4 is tied with John Senden. To the top of the leader board, Senden had eagled his 13th hole of the day. PGA tour mainstay Chris DiMarco is one stroke behind them. Paddy Harrington is t -2. He had a very difficult 2010 season. He is back by just two shots.

Qatar Masters: Goosen on Top
On the opening day of the Qatar Masters, strong winds have played havoc, with the swirling desert sand reducing visibility at the Doha Golf Club. With the winds of up to 40 kilometers per hour (25 mph), players in the $2.5 million event struggled to cope. The forecasters expected the winds to strengthen during the afternoon. In the opening round, only nine players broke par. After nine, world number one Lee Westwood was one-over-par while playing companion and world number seven Steve Stricker was struggling at four-over. He was on a first visit to the region.
At the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, Martin Kaymer was expected to challenge Lee Westwood’s top ranking. As strong winds lashed the Doha Golf Club and pounded some of the game’s best-known names into submission, the German World No. 2 finds himself in a precarious position from where even making the halfway cut would be considered a significant achievement.
At one-under 71, Markus Brier, Seve Benson, Thomas Aiken and Oliver Fisher are tied for sixth.
